CHIEF INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
TONY AFRICANO

Picture
Tony began training in the combat arts from the age of ten and has been actively involved in martial arts for over 40 years. His traditional roots lay with the Japanese karate school of GoJu-Ryu. Later, he also went on to train within the Shito-Ryu and Shorin-Ryu styles of karate.  Having attained black belts in all three systems he’s augmented his training in many other martial arts including Tae-Kwon Do, Ju-Jitsu, Kung-Fu and the Japanese arts of sword mastery known as Kenjutsu and Iaido.

At a very young age, Tony achieved the title of State Kata-Champion and continued to train and teach at both national and international levels.  He has spent many years teaching children and adults, specializing in women’s self-defence courses with the YMCA and also within the West Australian state and private school systems. In recent years he’s also attained both State and National titles in The National All-Styles tournament circuit, in both kata and fighting categories of competition.

Whist training in Japan during 2007, Tony was graded to 5th Dan .

Tony has always held and a very open and respectful orientation to all traditional martial arts though in recent years he has focused his attention on close-combat and self-defence practice that is more ‘street-wise’ and reality-based.  Rather than a particular ‘art’ or ‘system’, Goshin-Do is seen more as a “no nonsense approach to reality-based self-defence" and not a formal style.

One of his favourite martial artists is veteran UFC/MMA legend, Randy Couture. Tony remarks, “Couture is an inspiration, as he’s consistently shown how one’s mind, tenacity and experience can prevail against all sorts of odds.”

In addition to his dedication to self-defence, Tony also holds an Advanced and Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy together with qualifications in Professional Counselling.  He is a Full Member of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Association of Western Australia.  He runs a successful private practice in Mount Lawley, named The Lindsay Centre and has also lectured in Psychotherapy and Counselling since 1997.

Muay Thai Training, Thailand 2012

Tony Africano Thailand 2012
Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.
The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya which means "to bind together".
Muay thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated combat sports, such as kickboxing and savate.

Kata - NAS Competition, Melbourne 2007

Kata is a Japanese word describing detailed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs.
Karate Kata are executed as a specified series of a variety of moves, with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form.
The practitioner is counseled to visualize the enemy attacks and their responses.
Karateka "read" a kata in order to explain the imagined events.
There are perhaps 100 kata across the various forms of karate, each with many minor variations.
